Botswana
Botswana’s Wild Tapestry: Explore and discover Botswana’s iconic landscapes and rich wildlife, traversing the Kalahari and the Okavango’s waterways, as well as the game rich forested islands and floodplains.
This journey weaves together three distinct wilderness experiences, each revealing a different facet of Botswana’s natural splendor. At Dinaka, the Kalahari’s semi‑arid expanses offer intimate encounters with desert‑adapted species and the quiet drama of life around remote waterholes. From there, the adventure moves into the lush heart of the Delta at Shinde and Kanana, two camps set on palm‑dotted islands where winding channels, thriving floodplains, and abundant wildlife create a vibrant contrast to the desert’s stillness. Together, these camps form a seamless narrative of diversity and discovery—an immersion into Botswana’s most celebrated ecosystems, each adding its own rhythm, texture, and sense of wonder to the journey.
Download Fact SheetThe 8 night Ker & Downey Botswana Distinctive Journey consists of 2 nights in the Kalahari and 6 nights in two exceptional areas of the Okavango Delta..
Featuring short & direct flights across vast and dramatic landscapes, this itinerary is a visual and visceral feast of Botswana’s highlights.
Dinaka: An exclusive private conservancy hugging the northern edge of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Dinaka is host to one of the most unique bio-diversities in southern Africa. This ever-changing desert landscape gives refuge to the Kalahari lion, springbok, oryx and brown hyena. The annual rains transform the arid desert landscape into a lush profusion of Kalahari vegetation, offering guests a unique insight into the lesser known desert experience. The Sleep Out Deck offers guests a panoramic view and the opportunity to spend the night under the magnificent African night sky.
Shinde: Nestled on a lush palm island in the heart of the northern Okavango Delta, Shinde is an iconic camp—one of the first in Botswana and long loved by safari purists for its character, warmth, and extraordinary setting. The new Shinde is thoughtfully rebuilt to honour its former self, retaining the soul and spirit that made it legendary while elevating comfort and design. Positioned on the edge of the Shinde Lagoon, the camp looks out over a landscape that simply teems with animal and birdlife, from grazing lechwe and quietly patrolling predators to the constant flutter and call of Delta bird species. With its blend of heritage, intimacy, and exceptional wilderness access, Shinde offers a timeless Delta experience that feels both deeply rooted and wonderfully renewed.
Kanana: A hidden jewel on the Xudum River, Kanana is located in the southwest of the Okavango Delta. The area encompasses a necklace of islands dotted with palms, figs, ebony and knob thorn, and is home to a myriad of birds, plants and animals. The nature of the habitat means it is the perfect place to experience the diversity of species found within the Okavango Delta. The annual floods transform parts of this concession into a true water paradise, offering guests the best of both worlds. At certain times of the year guests may actually enjoy the breath taking spectacle of the water visibly rising around the camp’s raised teak decks. There is also a Sleep Out Deck that offers guests the opportunity to spend the night under the splendid African night sky.
Dinaka: Situated alongside the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the focus of activities at Dinaka is exploring the Kalahari experience with wildlife ranging from giraffe to the antelope, small mammals like the honey badger, bat eared fox and porcupine to predators including the Kalahari lion, cheetah, leopard and brown hyena. Activities include morning and afternoon game drives in open safari vehicles, with afternoon game drives often continuing into the evening. Alternatively, you may get more up close and personal with nature on foot with guided bush walks. Birding is particularly spectacular as Dinaka hosts over 200 different bird species including the Kori Bustard and Crimson Breasted Shrike and a high concentration of Pale Chanting Goshawks. The reserve offers an educational walk with San Bushmen in addition to day and night game drives. Year-round water holes result in spectacular photographic opportunities either from the underground bunker, hide or vehicle.
Shinde: Days at Shinde unfold with an easy, unhurried rhythm, offering guests a remarkable range of activities shaped by the Delta’s shifting seasons. Classic game drives explore the surrounding woodlands and floodplains, where predators, plains game, and rare sightings create unforgettable moments. When water levels allow, guests can glide silently through papyrus channels by mokoro or venture deeper by motorboat, discovering hidden lagoons alive with birdlife and the gentle movement of aquatic creatures. Guided bush walks reveal the smaller details of the ecosystem—tracks, textures, and stories written into the landscape—while catch‑and‑release fishing adds a playful, relaxed dimension to afternoons on the water. This diversity of experiences ensures every day at Shinde feels fresh, immersive, and deeply connected to the magic of the Okavango Delta.
Kanana: Situated in the Kanana Concession, the focus of activities at Kanana varies with the rising and falling levels of the Okavango Delta. Activities include morning and afternoon game drives in open safari vehicles, with afternoon game drives often continuing into the evening. Kanana’s private concession location allows guided walks, Mokoro excursions and night drives in addition to game drives and motor boating. Wildlife is in abundance with frequent predator sightings such as lion, leopard and wilddog all making Kanana their hunting grounds. The camp also affords private access to one of the largest heronries not only in the Okavango Delta but Southern Africa and is an excellent area for birding with regular sightings of Pels Fishing Owl.
